One miracle, among the many miracles of the Quran, is that its meanings and recitation usually have a huge impact on a person’s heart, regardless of whether one recites the Quraan oneself, or is listening to someone else’s recitation, even if the listener has never ever heard a single word of the Quraan before. For a Muslim, it is a wajib (compulsory) to listen attentively when the Quraan is being recited in his, or her presence.
The famous scholar of Islam, Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him), has said in one of his books, "Allah gave permission to His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, to Recite Quran in a melodious way. Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari, may Allaah be pleased with him, was once reciting Quran in a melodious voice and Allaah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him. was listening to him. After Abu Musa, may Allaah be pleased with him, had finished reciting the Quran, Allaah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, congratulated him on reciting in a such a melodious way, and said, "You have a good voice." Allaah’s Messenger, peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, said about Abu Musa al-Ash`ari that Allaah had given him a "mizmar" (flute, or horn) from Prophet Dawud's, peace be upon him, mizmars. Abu Musa, may Allaah be pleased with him, then declared, "O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, if I had known that you were listening, I would have recited it in an even more melodious and beautiful voice."
Commenting on this incident, Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy on him, said: "To take pleasure in a good voice is acceptable, as is taking pleasure from a beautiful landscape, such as mountains or nature, or from a nice smell, or from good food, as long as it conforms to the Sharia (Islamic Law). If listening to a good voice is haram (forbidden), then taking pleasure in all these other things is also haram."
There is absolutely no doubt that the Quran is a very powerful and unique book containing immense knowledge, and people are deeply moved when they hear the words and contemplate upon the knowledge and teachings of the Quran. Listening to audio and video Quran Recitations is very important and helpful tool for learning Tajweed (the right pronunciation of Quranic Arabic), and it is said that pronouncing Quranic Arabic correctly is the first right of the Quran. Hence, special attention must be paid to Tajweed when reciting Quran.
Even though it is obligatory upon the reciter of the Quran to recite it in as beautiful a voice as possible, yet this certainly does not mean that those who are unable to recite the Quran in an exquisite voice should not reap the rewards of reciting Quran. Imam Bukhari, may Allaah have mercy on him, has mentioned the following Hadith in his Sahih with reference to the Mother of the Believers, Aa’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, that: "He who is skillful in reciting Quran is with the unveiled, honorable, and pious. And he who stutters when reading the Quran, (and its recitation) is difficult upon him, will receive two rewards."
A Muslim should, therefore, strive to make his, or her, Quran Recitation as beautiful as possible, yet before one does that, one has to learn to read Quran with tajweed, since that is where the journey starts. Take the first step today!
